The Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau of California (WCIRB) has released its COVID-19 in California Workers' Compensation report, which details the characteristics of COVID-19 workers’ compensation claims in California and their impact on the state’s workers’ compensation system.

Highlights of the report include:

• Almost 160,000 COVID-19 claims, including denied claims, were reported as of early September 2021, compared with about 600,000 workers’ compensation claims of all types filed in a typical year.
• Since the rollout of the vaccines in early 2021, the ratio of COVID-19 indemnity claims to all indemnity claims has been relatively low.
• More than 40 percent of all COVID-19 claims with incurred benefits involve only indemnity benefits. Most, but not all, of these “indemnity only” claims are small and close quickly.
