Determine Your Food and Beverage Service Industry Classification

Effective for policies incepting on or after September 1, 2024, any operations assignable to Classification 9079(1), Restaurants or Taverns, must be reassigned to one of six new classifications. The WCIRB's online tool can help you quickly determine which food and beverage classification applies, based on the information provided1. Click the Start arrow in the tool below and then follow the prompts on each screen. The recommendation to divide Classification 9079(1), Restaurants or Taverns, into six new classifications was the result of a multi-year WCIRB study on the Food and Beverage Service Industry Group. The recommendation was approved, and effective September 1, 2024, any operations assignable to Classification 9079(1), Restaurants or Taverns, must be reassigned to one of the following six classifications (click each link for the full classification footnote):  

Five of these six classifications are part of the new Food and Beverage Service Industry Group. The new industry group also includes the following classifications applicable to food and beverage service operations: 

  • 8078(1), Sandwich Shops 
  • 8078(2), Beverage Preparation Shops 
  • 8078(3), Ice Cream or Frozen Yogurt Shops 
  • 9081(2), Concessionaires
